The Muffin God Man

Sunday I was the substitute teacher for the preschool Sunday school class. One minute we’re discussing Jehoshaphat and then out of absolutely nowhere one girl tells me, “My Mom wants another baby. A girl.”

A few minutes later one boy turns to another asking, “How often do you go to the doctor? Tell me about last shot. I want to hear all about it.”

Toward the end we sang “Thank You God That You Are Here” to the tune of “Do You Know The Muffin Man?” So of course for one boy it comes out something like this: “Do you know the Muffin God Man?”

I asked him if he could try singing, “Thank you God that you are here” instead of “Do you know the Muffin God Man.”

“Um, I don’t know,” he said. “I’ll have to practice. I’ll give it a try, though.” And as he colored his picture he quietly sang, “Do you know the Muffin God Man? The Muffin God Man, The Muffin God Man….”

Then we discussed how parents take care of their babies – as a transition to how God takes care of His children. One girl, a couple months shy of three, said “When I am crying, my Mom consoles me.” The boy beside her asked her what “console” means. “I don’t know,” she said. “But sometimes my Dad consoles me, too.”

Then, somehow and strangely, they start talking amongst themselves about the fact that their Moms haven’t died.

What the heck?

Wow. Talk about some random conversation bits.

I'm still getting over the fact that a 3 year old was using the word "console". Correctly. Even if she didn't know what it meant, it's still impressive!
