So much for my assistance
At the park the other day I overheard a man trying to converse with one of the nannies. His Spanish was worse than mine and she spoke no English. I offered my help, such as it is.
The man told me he was trying to find a nanny for his two month-old son – he thought maybe one of the nannies in the park would know someone who was available.
“She has to be at least fifty years old,” he said to me in earnest, “because a 25 year-old is just not going to have enough patience.”
There was a long pause.
He thought I was figuring out how to translate that. Actually, I was trying to come up with a nice way of saying, “You realize that in a year or so your son is going to running all over creation and a 50 year-old woman may not be able to keep up with him…”
He stared at me.
So much for my assistance.
