Jonah’s ears

Jonah got over the sound of Benjamin’s cries – took him several months, though.

He got over the sound of the surf, which is important because we live by the sea.

He got over the sound of the blender since we use it several times a week.

He tolerates the sound of the printer if I’m holding him.

But a jackhammer right outside our door nearly put him over the edge this morning.

Out of absolutely nowhere a very loud piece of mechanical equipment started up – so loud it vibrated our floor as well. It took me by surprise and I emitted a brief “aghhhh!”

(When will I ever learn to maintain a calm composure at all loud noises around Jonah?!)

So instead of just the expected screaming, Jonah’s whole body went stiff as he sat on the floor and he became instantly hysterical, thanks to my reaction. Even Benjamin thought it was the second coming and ran towards me, howling.

“Do you hear the loud noise? Loud noise - wow! So loud.” It really helps Jonah to talk about the noise. “It’s coming from outside. It’s so loud, isn’t it? It’s just like in your Snoopy book. Snoopy bangs on the door: bam, bam, bam, so he can see Charlie Brown. Bam! Bam! Bam! Just like this noise.”

“Bam,” says Benjamin, cautiously. Jonah is still clinging to my upper torso for dear life.

Turns out some dudes are doing repair work that is supposed to last a few days.

God help us all.

Poor Jonah! A jackhammer outside my door would have put me over the edge for sure!
