Everybody’s happies

One of Benjamin’s favorite pastimes is to be chased. But I was VERY busy reading the latest issue of Real Simple (thanks for the renewal, Mom!) so when he asked me to chase him I told him to ask his brother.

“Chase you!” he said to Jonah.

“Benjamin, you have to say ‘Chase me,’” I pointed out.

So as he was running away from Jonah, he said over his shoulder: “Chase you meeeee!”

And speaking of Benjamin’s running – and pretty much everything else that he does apart from breathing in and out – he has to talk about it. So when he’s running, he has to tell me, “Neh-neh running!” When he’s jumping, he has to tell me “Neh-neh jumping!” Or, when I put the boys on the queen-size bed after their naps, he says “Neh-Neh big bed Shirt! Jonah big bed Puppy!” (”Benjamin is on the big bed with shirt. Jonah is on the big bed with puppy.”)

In a single day he speaks more words than Jonathan, Jonah, and I combined. And he’s transitioned from calling his brother “Nonah” to “Donah” and now just in the last few days “Jonah.”

Benjamin (next to me while I was changing Jonah): Hi Jonah big poop diaper!

Out of nowhere, Benjamin has told me several times this week “hot potato crying.” I have no idea what is talking about, but somewhere out there is a very sad spud that has made a distinct impression on my son.

He also does not like it when I am sad. Or when I behave in such a way that could be construed as exhibiting sadness. He told me today that he was happy and Jonah was happy and Shirt was happy and Puppy was happy. “Everybody’s happies!” he said.

And I said, with a sad face, “No, Mama’s sad.”

He began to panic and vigorously shook his head. “No! No Mama sad. Mama happy, yeah!”

The other day Jonathan and I were playing around - I yelped and jumped into Jonathan’s arms and we were laughing and carrying on loudly. The boys watched from their chairs and Benjamin said “No! No Mama loud noise! No Dada holding Mama!” I told him we were just playing, but he was adamant. When I looked more closely I could see tears in his eyes.

Jonah has begun gesticulating with his hands when he speaks in incoherent paragraphs like this one: “Blehn sheek zin woos VEE zupi klun liekk abhzohn sheek zin woos liekk abhzohn airplane.”

And he’s happy when I respond with, “Oh really? In an airplane?” Whereas with Benjamin I have to repeat his whole sentence back to him word for word and if I mess up, he repeats it, then he tries Spanish, then he says it really s-l-o-w-l-y and with great emPHAsis.

Jonah pronounces the letter Q “coo-you.” He also has started saying “yep” and “nope” instead of yes and no. When he wants Benjamin to follow him: Neh-neh come here!

When he saw my rollerblades for the first time, he looked at the wheels and said "Mama train shoes!"

He’s also understanding now that we use the term “naked” to describe being unclothed (his preferred state). Before he would always say – with great glee – BIG BOY! So when I got out of the shower, it was always “Mama big boy!”

When Jonah scooped up a small piece of red clothing out of the dirty clothes, Benjamin thought it was Shirt and had a panic attack. “Calm down, Benjamin. It’s not Shirt,” I said examining it more closely. “Ack! It’s my underwear!” And Jonah tore through the room exclaiming “It’s my underwear! It’s my underwear!”

they sound so cute - most of my boys words are incoherant. J speaks in sentences of jibberish very earnestly to me - S just a few words mostly. Do your boys have there own twin talk language ?
LOL at the underwear.
