A different kind of Oscar: My Own 2007 Films

Since I haven’t seen most of the films nominated for an Oscar this year, I’ve created my own competition based on the ones I did see.  Here are the categories and contenders.... the winners are in italics.

Documentary:

The Blue Planet  (very close second)
Super Size Me
The Life of Birds I, II   (They're documentaries.  About birds.  How can they not win?)
The Wild Birds of Telegraph Hill   (It’s a documentary.  About birds.  How can it not win?)
Fast Food Nation
Blue Vinyl
Who Killed the Electric Car

Comedy:

Medea Goes to Jail   (anything by Tyler Perry has me hysterical)
Sideways   (waste of two hours)

Action / Adventure:

Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest   (a close second)
Pirates of the Caribbean 2 - Curse of the Black Pearl
Batman Begins
Spiderman 3
X-Men 3
X-Men 2
Star Wars I - The Phantom Menace
Star Wars II - The Clone Wars
Star Wars III - The Revenge of the Sith
Pirates of the Carribbean 3 - At World's End
Oceans 11   (a solid tie for third)
Ocean's 13   (a solid tie for third)

(Note:  I also watched The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it would be unfair to include them here as they are some of the best movies of all time and would unfairly dominate and overwhelm the other contenders.)

Drama:

The Color Purple
The Constant Gardener  (waste of two hours)
Serpico
21 Grams   (waste of two hours)
Amazing Grace
The Pursuit of Happyness
Babel   (waste of two hours)
The Painted Veil   (second -- an intense and beautiful film, but something about it just doesn’t quite come together)
The Departed
Blood Diamond

Foreign Language:

Science of Sleep
Alatriste  (more about meeting Viggo Mortensen)
Sonar No Cuesta Nada / A Ton of Luck
Mongolian Ping Pong
Das Leben Der Anderen / Lives of Others   (strong second)
Volver
Il Postino
Life is Beautiful
