Sleeping? I think not.

We put the boys to bed last night. As is standard practice lately, there is much protest and general commotion. Requests for milk, requests for being held while the parental unit is standing up (“Mama big hold you??”), and requests for snuggling together on the queen size bed beside their cribs (“Nuggle big bed??”). All of which go ignored. But it occurs to me to ask them if they want to be in the same crib, since they are past the point now of smothering one another (assuming we keep Benjamin on his lo-cal diet, that is).

This idea is a big hit and they talk to each other, giggle, and sing for several minutes during their first official slumber party.

Jonathan, “Uncle B David,” and I finish our movie while eating dinner and since nothing but silence has come from the boys’ bedroom for over half an hour, we sneak in to take a peek. And scare Jonah out of his wits. Wail-wail-wail! We quickly backtrack out the door. Jonathan insists on taking Jonah some milk. “Over my dead body,” I say, blocking his way. “Sometimes three people sneak into your room at night and you just have to learn to put yourself back to sleep. Sans milk!”

Jonah was officially asleep within a few minutes and didn’t stir when we went in to move Benjamin to his crib and change both their diapers.

When he went down for a nap today, again everything was very quiet. I opened the door to check on them after about half an hour. I slowly peeked my head in, then quickly pulled it back. Jonah was standing up, Puppy in mouth, facing the door. Was I fast enough?

“Mama!” he said, so happy to see me. I was silent.

“Mama! Come on!” in a friendly way, as if inviting me to play.

Really, how can one resist that?

It appears that you were in charge for almost two years but the tide has turned.
