Blog With Me Baby: preventing comment spam

Welcome to the third edition of Blog With Me Baby, a carnival of blogging! My tip this week is how to prevent comment spam. I used to get annoying comments detailing where I get easily obtain prescription medications or “I’ll link to you if you’ll link to me” nonsense. And these comments were usually left on posts published a few months ago.

Then I discovered that my blogging software (SquareSpace) has an option called “disable comment on” that allows me to enter a time/date to close each post to new comments. Once I began setting a specific disable date (usually a week or two after the post is published), my comment spam diminished to virtually nothing.

Do you have a blog-related post you would like to share?

  • A tip that makes your blogging more effective/fun/efficient!
  • Just got tagged for a meme?
  • Do you advertise on your site: why or why not?
  • What hardware/software/other equipment do you use?
  • What are your weekly must-read blogs and why?
  • List the pros/cons of your blogging platform.
  • Or just showcase your new blog design!

Guidelines:

1. Use the Mr. Linky below to enter the link to your Blog With Me Baby post (not to your home page).

2. Enter your name and up to three words describing your post so that everyone knows the topic you’re writing about -- see the first entry below as an example.

3. Please mention Blog With Me Baby in your post and link back to this list, otherwise your entry will be deleted.

I've noticed too that spam tends to appear on older posts. I really hate the word verification thing--I like the simple math (five minus 3) better, but I don't know if mine has an auto off, I guess I'll check.
