Benjamin, driven by duty

Wake Forest, Jonathan and my alma mater, recently announced the convocation speaker: Paul Rusesabagina, whose story is chronicled in the powerful film “Hotel Rwanda.” And speaking of off-the-beaten-path movies, we watched “The Science of Sleep” and “Mongolian Ping Pong” this past week. I enjoyed both and recommend the former if you liked “Amelie”. As soon as your kids are old enough to understand sub-titles, they might enjoy the latter. Jonathan did not enjoy either… I think his exact words were, “This is torture.”

We tease Benjamin about being chubby, only because next to Jonah he looks downright plump. (Next to Jonah a stick insect would look downright plump.) But he is still quite small compared to most boys his age. (For some reason I had it in my head that preemies catch up by age one, but it’s actually by age two.) At the park the other day a little boy came toddling over to my boys who were crawling around in the grass. This little boy thought it would be great fun to “hug” them (yikes) until his nanny came over and pulled him away. She asked how old my boys were and I asked the same of her. Turns out he was two weeks older than mine (but much bigger) and she was telling him, “Be careful with the little babies! They are little babies - be gentle!”

Below are several photos from the weekend. First, here’s Benjamin learning to drink from a bottle by himself – he does it pretty well when he’s laying down. This morning I gave him 4 oz of vegetable puree then laid him down for him to feed himself from his bottle. He made a little coughing noise then vomited half-way across the continent. I’m assuming (hoping) that was from the cold he’s getting over and not the GERD re-rearing it’s ugly head.

This cold has not been kind to the boys – bad cough, runny nose, sore throat, fever, and general misery. Jonah’s tendency towards whininess skyrockets under these conditions. See below for the happiest we’ve seen him in a few days – pretty pathetic.

The boys had their first carousel ride on Saturday. Jonah was not amused, especially since the mosquitoes were viciously attacking him (see his forehead). Benjamin, with a somber face, held on to the pole as if driven by duty.

Traumatized by the carousel ride, Jonah fell asleep on the stroller ride home and Benjamin, desperate for a blanket, pulled off his sock so he could suck his thumb. (For some reason, he can’t suck his thumb without holding fabric up to his mouth.)
