Washington D.C., part 2

Jonathan’s uncle Jorge flew in to meet us there – it was his first trip to the U.S.!  We picked him up from the airport and had brunch in a recently redeveloped area in Georgetown along the Potomac:

Further along the Potomac we visited Mt. Vernon, which I found much more interesting as an adult!  It is a fun place for kids, though, as it has a bunch of barnyard animals (Silas found the sheep amusing, but was convinced they wanted to eat him), flower and vegetable gardens, lots of paths to walk down, and open areas to run around.  AND a great fort in a border of bushes overlooking the Potomac (“Mama, can we just stay in this fort all day?”):

We met up with my brother several times – here we are reading the Gettysburg Address at the Lincoln Memorial:

I love the World War II memorial, especially the carved murals depicting scenes of the war, both home and abroad:

One day we headed over to Old Town Alexandria and had an hour to kill before we met up with Jonathan for dinner.  We ended up at a little park right on the Potomac with some open green space and rocks along the river to climb on… perfect for three little boys.  Jorge wanted to walk off to get some snacks.  Knowing it was unlikely we’d ever see him again, Dora was quick on her feet and said it was best if women and children weren’t left alone in that area, delivered straight-faced.  I contributed a knowing nod with appropriate solemnity.  Whew.  The way that man wanders off is crazy.  And he would have come back with enough food to last us a week.

Turns out those are the exact same rocks Jonathan spent many hours playing on himself when he was just a few years older than the boys!

Silas’ favorite part of the entire trip was the Pooh Bear statue right in front of the hotel.  It’s actually a panda because it is a couple blocks from the National Zoo, but any bear is Pooh Bear to Silas.

Then one day the boys and I walked a few blocks past the zoo to a library and we discovered yet another Pooh Bear!

That would be Jonah with the gun.

The gun bought for him at Mount Vernon.

Because we were running short on weapons at home.
