The doctor is called

Silas has been having some sort of intestinal/digestive difficulties that make him squirm and scream during random times of the day for the past several days. I don’t think it’s colic (it happens at different times on different days) or anything I’m eating (what I eat changes daily – his pain doesn’t) - - but it seems like massive amounts of painful gas.

This plus poops that are essentially liquid and shot out of him with explosive force (I’m talking five feet if he times it correctly during a diaper change)... well, we tried to catch the doctor last Friday afternoon before the weekend.

What we thought was diarrhea is actually normal poop for breastfeeding babies. We’ve just never had a baby on 100% breast milk before. So we can expect projectile poop for a while.... good to know.

And the writhing in agony thing is “normal” as well. Maybe his digestive system has to mature a bit, who knows.

The only thing that seems to help is a pacifier, which he sucks like a fiend during these attacks. The worst is when they come during a feeding. He screams, won’t eat, then when the pain subsides instantly falls asleep and can’t possibly be roused. And I’m good at rousing sleepy babies – I have lots of practice.

So for now the pacifier works – until five minutes later when he spits it out and you have to put it back in. We’ll worry about the pacifier addiction later – when I’m getting enough sleep to care.

The doctor also said three years ago that they would outgrow this (and they did). Do doctors ever experience this stuff personally? You are a great Mom.
