Feeling a bit old
The last time I was truly up on the current music scene was 2000, when Napster was functioning – ahem – properly. I was working (and I use that term loosely) at a software company that had just been bought out. The new parent company handled the takeover with much ineptitude and inefficiency, but I didn’t care as I was about to quit, get married, and move to Buenos Aires.
So I spent about six hours of each day downloading music and teaching myself about the stock market (and wondering when the #*$&@ Jonathan was going to officially propose – but that’s a different story altogether). Fast forward though living overseas, the death of a properly functioning Napster, pregnancy, and preemie twins then toddlers... I’m pretty musically clueless now.
Example: I linked to this cute video during election fever, thinking to myself what a clever teacher these kids must have to create such a catchy tune and snappy lyrics.
So yesterday I’m at the gym and a couple of middle school boys load up an iPod onto some sort of rectangular device that allows them to broadcast their music to the entire east coast.
Which was fine with me since my cell phone had recently taken a trip through our washing machine and therefore I had no mp3 player. So I’m half-listening and then I hear “.... you can whatever you like...” and it sounds so very familiar. I listen closely and realize where and why I know it.
It’s a really good song.
A shame it’s basically about the lifestyle of a high-class hooker.
