Demented
I watched this clip of The View last night - because I wanted to hear Joy Baher's comment that homeschooling creates demented kids. It's around the seven minute mark, but not knowing that, I watched the first part with Barack and Michelle Obama as well. He's very good at making prepared answers seem spontaneous - and he had some funny comments about his mother-in-law.
But back to the homeschooling comment... it was timely because in the past several weeks I have met several homeshooling families. Their kids seem normal, but the Moms are very strange. Freaky, even. And I was beginning to understand why many people have such stereotypical and negative views of homeschooling people.
(Being freaky myself, I don't really help matters do I?)
But one particularly odd conversation I had a couple of days ago involved a woman saying to me - on the topic of starting a homeschooling co-op - "Why don't we hire a 'real' teacher to come three days a week and..."
That's an interesting idea, but it's called Private School. Not homeschooling.
Then I saw a headline stating that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are homeschooling their eldest son. But when you read the article, they've actually hired a private tutor.
What exactly is the definition of homeschooling anyway?

I don't know...for me, I like the idea of my kids immersed in the mechanics of school outside the home -- I feel they'll learn leadership, how to deal with difficult people, etc... As far as the education part, I think homeschooling is probably just as -- if not more -- effective.
But I could never home school. I'm a lazybones.
